Bird Songs and Bird Calls Log

Prairie Warbler
Sunday, 05/03/2020 at Avery Farm Nature Preserve Blue Trail.  Identified by describing the song on the Connecticut Birds Facebook group.  I heard them in the clearing with tall trees on either side, in between the swamp and the woods, after the farm.  Eight to ten notes going up the scale, it had an electronic sound.

Fish Crow
Sunday, 05/10/2020 at Barn Island - at the boat launch
Alex pointed the fish crow out to me and described the differences between the common American crow and fish crow.  Fish crow has a narrower, pointier beak, is a little smaller and it is usually found near water. In sun you may catch a purple sheen on the feathers; American crow's feathers are pitch black.

They have a higher, nasal call, also known for double Ca! Ca!:

Compare to American crow, throatier, more assertive CAW:

Killdeer
Various dates beginning summer of 1999, Eastern Point Beach.  Named because they sometimes call with a shrill KILL-DEER usually in flight.  These birds were talking while flying in a flock; the call was identified to me later.

Eastern Towhee - various calls
Every summer I need a refresher on their various noises.  There is the chew-INK! (some people call them Chewinks). Then there is Drink Your Tea. And a single note that sounds like a dreet! or su-WEET! to my ear.

Ovenbird
Sheep Farm, 05/24/2020
I've always been curious to see one of these.  Lee found a nest in her backyard one year. They're called ovenbirds because they build dome shaped nests said to resemble a dutch oven.
(Disregard nuthatch also calling)
